EarthNet: Open-Source, Community Earthquake Early Warning

We are sharing a community, open-source project we have been working on: EarthNet, an earthquake early-warning (EEW) network for Latin America. It is not a product we sell — it is open infrastructure we want to exist, so we opened it for anyone to use, audit and contribute to.

It does not predict: it races the destructive wave

No system predicts earthquakes. What you can do: detect the P-wave —fast and non-destructive— near the epicenter and fire an alert that arrives ahead of the slow, destructive S-wave. That buys you seconds to take cover. The heart of the app is a live countdown to the S-wave arrival at your location. Seconds save lives.

Hybrid and decentralized

EarthNet fuses official seismograph feeds with a distributed network of smartphones (each phone is both sensor and client). There is no mandatory central server: the network outlives its creators. On-device detection uses STA/LTA + a 2–8 Hz band-pass; events are signed with Ed25519 under anonymous identities, and consensus is reputation-weighted. Privacy-first: FFT only, never raw audio or imagery.

An MVP verified with real data

Tested end to end with real Chilean seismograph data, alerting on a physical Android phone: 284 public stations across South America wired in real time (16 networks), on-device P-wave detection over a shared Rust core, and consensus by phase association — six real stations triangulated an epicenter to ~7 km, while isolated noise picks are dropped on their own (killing false positives).

More than an earthquake app

EEW is the flagship app, not the end goal. EarthNet's vision is an open planetary-sensing substrate: heterogeneous sensors (phones, IoT, stations, satellite, weather) + distributed AI to discover geophysical phenomena in real time. It is to geophysics what BOINC was to computing: a narrow waist anyone can build on. It does not replace official agencies (CSN, USGS, JMA, INGV): it adds an open layer of correlation and experimentation on top of them.

Open source, built to build on

Everything is AGPL-3.0, across eight repositories (protocol, fusion/consensus node, relay, mobile app, ingestion adapters, dashboard and a knowledge agent), with a Rust · Flutter · Python · TypeScript stack.
